2020 WNC Dairy Beef Feeder Calf Project

Would your child like to raise a calf?

All Western North Carolina youth — particularly those who have never shown livestock before — are invited to apply for the 2020 WNC Dairy Beef Feeder Calf Program. Participants must be between 8 and 18 years old as of January 1, 2020. The project is limited to 50 participants, with priority going to first-time participants of the program.

Youth accepted into the program will receive a calf from a sponsor dairy as well as start-up supplies such as milk replacer and starter feed. Youth will house and care for the calf, with guidance from the Program Committee. All calves will be sold by lot the conclusion of the program, and youth may keep the proceeds from the sale (minus enrollment fees).

Some important things to know about the program:

  • Interested youth must submit an application at the mandatory orientation meeting on Thursday, February 27, 2020, at 6 p.m. at the WNC Regional Livestock Market in Canton. The meeting will cover type of space needed for the project, some basics about caring for the calf, expected costs, show premiums, and a project timeline.
  • It is not necessary to be a current 4-H member to participate in this project. All interested families are invited to come and learn about the project at the Orientation.
  • Participants will feed and monitor calf health daily.
  • Participants must train, halter break, and show their calf at the WNC Mountain State Fair and the Haywood County fair shows.
  • All calves must be sold with the lot at the conclusion of the program and cannot be purchased by individual exhibitors.
  • Parents or legal guardians of youth participants are responsible for all expenses incurred in the program, including feed.
