Safe Plates is NC State Extension's family of evidence-based food safety programming and resources for retail, community and home-based food safety.

The NC State Extension Safe Plates Program has two branches - Research and Extension. The Extension Educational and Outreach Programs primarily serves to provide consistent, evidence-based programs targeted to specific audiences. Programs are designed incorporating the best available science in food safety and presented considering adult education and behavior theories. This spans of retail food safety, community food safety to consumer food safety such as home food preservation.

Programs are typically delivered at county extension centers. For upcoming programming check the events page and local Cooperative Extension county pages.

Resources within the NC State Extension Safe Plates brand include this website, fact sheets, articles, videos, social media communication platforms, etc. that can provide evidence-based scientific information without direct contact with a Safe Plates team member or program. We have a team of Safe Plates Distinguished Educators in North Carolina that have exhibited advancement in food safety programming. These FCS Extension agents are leaders in retail food safety programming, home food preservation or both in their districts.

Safe Plates FSIC

The Safe Plates Food Safety Information Center (FSIC) gives people information like the science behind the 5-second rule, what restaurant inspection scores mean, and how flour gets contaminated with pathogenic E. coli. Real, evidence-based scientific food safety information that can help people make safe food choices. Safe Plates FSIC is an online community and resource that utilizes various social media channels to improve food safety knowledge, attitudes and practices of users by delivering evidence-based scientific food safety information.
